Chopping an onion is one of the most important cooking skills. Chopped onions are the first ingredient in endless essential recipes, from soups and sauces to pasta dishes, sautés, stir-fried veggies, and more.

Despite it being so easy, many home cooks don't know the right way to do it, but if there's one knife skill you should master, it should probably be this.

Follow the steps below and watch the video to learn see how to peel and dice an onion properly, quickly, and efficiently

1. Place wet kitchen paper or a tea towel under your chopping board so it doesn’t move around

2. Trim the root off your onion, but leave the base of the root so it holds your onion together

3. Cut the onion straight in half through the root

4. Peel and dicard the outer layers

5. With the root end of the onion pointing away, slice the onion vertically, but not all the way through to root - leaving the root side intact will make chopping so much easier

6. Rotate the onion and now slice horizontally
