Choose the right pan for your cooking

When cooking, it's very important to choose the right equipment for what you’re making - this will ensure optimal flavours and textures in your end product. Therefore it’s a good idea to have more than one pan to use in different situations. Before you cook anything, look at the main thing that’s happening in a recipe and what type of food you’re cooking, and then decide on the pan to use. Here are three of the most common types of pans to use in your cooking.

Non-stick pan

Non-stick pans are treated with a special coating to stop food from sticking to them. When using these pans you should avoid using metal tools as this may scratch the coating - use only silicon and wooden tools to protect the non-stick surface.
These types of pans are best for their convenience and ease of use and maintenance. However, it’s important to note that they’re not great for foods that require high heat. It’s best to use them for delicate dishes that require low to medium heat, such as eggs, pancakes, and light proteins such as fish.

Cast Iron pans

Cast iron pans are versatile, sturdy pans that can be used on the stovetop and in the oven. They’re extremely durable and if you take proper care of them they can last for years and be a great investment. They require more effort to clean and maintain than non-stick and they are also very heavy.
If you need a good sear on something, such as steak, this is your go-to, but their versatility means they’re good for cooking nearly everything else and are therefore a great addition to any kitchen.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel pans can also be used on the stove or in the oven. They’re long-lasting, hardy, but lighter than cast iron pans.
You can cook nearly anything on a stainless steel pan including fish, steak, risotto, and eggs.
To ensure your food doesn't stick to the pan it’s crucial to use enough oil and preheat the pan before use.
They also usually create a tasty fond at the end of cooking which you can use to make a delicious pan sauce!
