The Joys of the Table

The Joys of the Table

  • 13 December 2017
The Italians call it gioie della tavola which translates to “the joys of the table”. It’s a combination of delicious food and drink, deep conversations, love, laughter and creating, as well as revisiting wonderful memories with your loved ones.

The holiday season is all about the joys of the table, magical moments and delicious memories. I remember waking up to the sound of pots and pans, classical music and mouth-watering aromas of roast lamb and morning coffee. Breakfast would be tea, scones with jam and grated cheese and then the hustle and bustle of getting the house ready for the guests would start.

Slowly but surely, the whole family and a bunch of close friends would arrive with trays, bowls, and what felt like buckets of food. We would have cheese platters with salami, olives, salty crackers and crisps. The adults had wine or beer (I would sneak a sip from my mother’s glass every now and then) and the kids had sparkling grape juice, being sold as champagne, but we knew better. Nevertheless, my cousins and I would sip it like ‘real grown-ups’.

Then the main course would make its way to the table, followed by a crowd of hungry friends and family members, joking, laughing and being merry. A speech was always to be expected and it usually fell to my dad, because he’s so good with words. Every year it would be the same.

We’re all caught up in the rat race of this world and we don’t get to see each other much. We have our own worries and joys and hopes and dreams, but what makes this holiday season so great, is that we get the chance to share those worries, joys, hopes and dreams with each other, and we are reminded of how important our family and friends really are. But the best part, of course, is that we get to eat amazing food!
So let’s raise a glass to gioie della tavola, to family, friends and to delicious food!

Have a wonderful holiday season!

Much love
